SLACK, CHARLES H.

Another short-lived drug store: C. H. Slack & Co., Druggists of Winfield, KS.  I'm not sure when Charles Slack came to Winfield, but in 1885, he was organizing a Drug Clerk's Association for the betterment of those drug clerks of the city.  At the time, he was one himself, working at Quincy Glass' Drug Store.  In 1886, he passes the state exam for his pharmacist's license, and after working a few months as a druggist for Mr. Glass, strikes out on his own, forming the C. H. Slack & Co. Drug Store.  He is active in the community, especially the Gymnastics Club and as a vocalist, with his talents in that field in demand with several organizations, but primarily the Methodist Church.  Things seem to be going smoothly for him, when suddenly, a short article in the Winfield Daily Courier in 1887, announces that the firm is being dissolved and Charles is "retiring."  That is cleared up a little in January, 1888, with a one line announcement that he is opening a drug store in Hutchinson.
