Father W. R. Rowley and son Henry K. Rowley opened their drugstore at the corner of 6th St. & Kansas Ave. in rapidly growing Topeka, KS, in 1868. This location put them in the heart of the business district and the expanding state government offices. This effort bore the name of Rowley & Co. and had Dr. E. Lewis as an investor for the first year. Lewis sold his interest in 1869. By 1871, W. R.’s name has disappeared from the newspaper ads and two brothers to Henry, James P. and Robert E. have joined him, with the store name changed to Rowley Brothers. This lasts until 1895, when Henry moves to Texas, where he has business interests and his daughter has been appointed head of the art department at the Fort Worth University. Trouble develops in determining how much Henry is due for his share of the drug store and the case goes to court. The store is eventually sold to Fred Snow and all debts settled. James Rowley comes back into the picture, becoming partners with Snow and naming the store the Rowley & Snow Drug Store. Robert Emmett Rowley opens his own store a few doors down, but dies a couple of years later from a heart attack. In 1905, the Rowley-Snow partnership dissolves, and James takes over as the Rowley Drug Store, which continues until his death in 1908.
