BARTON, GEORGE
GRATIGNY, A.F.
In 1888, two druggists, George Barton and A.F. Gratigny, then working as druggists for J. W. Allen in Atchison, KS, decided to strike out on their own, creating the Barton & Gratigny Drug Store. Although Gratigny was never in good health, his death in 1894 was unexpected. Barton buys the half ownership of the store from his widow and in 1895 changes the name to just Barton Drug Store. Along with the popular patent medicines of the day, he heavily advertised his soda fountain and ice cream. In 1902, he sells out to W. V. Ingham.
BEREMAN, SAMUEL O.
Samuel O. Bereman came from Iowa to Atchison, KS in 1873 and buys out Mr. Gunn from the Crane and Gunn Drug Store, creating the Crane and Bereman. Then Sam buys out Crane in 1875 and it's simply Bereman's. 1878 sees William Johnson buying in and it is the Johnson & Bereman. In 1881, Johnson is out, and Stevenson is in, but only lasts until 1882, when it is back to just Bereman's. Dr. Williams is in and out in 1886, and Griffin makes the scene in 1887, which again, only lasts a year. In 1888, it is Bereman & Ritner, which runs until 1904, when Ritner buys out Bereman. and old Sam disappears.
